Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born on January 10, 1797. This means that she was born shortly before the beginning of the turn of the century and right in the middle of a new era. She grew up in Burg Hülshoff in Westphalia. Her parents were aristocrats. In France, the privileges of the nobility had been eradicated. Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived and wrote between eras. Her family and her values were important to her, but she had her own mind. Today, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff is one of the most famous female poets in Germany. Her novel, Die Judenbuche, or, The Jew’s Beech, was read by many of us in school. Her book is about violence against minorities and violence against nature. It is also about the fact that each of us perceives the world differently and that there is no single objective truth. Today, these topics concern us perhaps more than ever before.
