THE ALLMENDE
Where is Allmende? The Droste Festival 2023 will take place under this title from 30 June to 2 July. Allmende is the German term for the more familiar English word »commons«, or in German ,,Gemeingut”. Commons existed for a long time, from the Middle Ages until the early 19th century. They were a common form of farming: a pasture or a forest, for example, was used communally. Today we don't know the word at all. This leads us to rediscover the concept in the 21st century and put it to the test. What did historical commons look like? Where do commons still exist today? Are texts and language commons? What rules and mechanisms are needed to make commons work and what are their limits? A versatile programme of workshops, performances, readings and concerts makes the theme tangible over three days.
In 2023, our established series Gegenwartserde (Contemporary Earth) will also focus on the theme of »commons«. Experts from science, art and activism will come together to question the way we talk and think about climate change and the environment.
THE SPUK
Anniversary: 175th anniversary of the death of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff
Mit den Gespenstern leben (haunting|heritage) is the name of our two-year project on haunting. In 2022, we celebrated the 225th birthday of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff in this way: we conjured up ghosts. On the 175th anniversary of her death, we continue to question these ghosts: How do we want to remember the poet? And how does cultural heritage haunt our present?
In the Droste Lab, a series of open workshops, we start moving the furniture in the museum at Burg Hülshoff. Together with you and the design studio please don't touch, we will design a space around an exhibit. This will gradually lead to a new understanding of the museum. Why is it the way it is today? And how will it be in the future?
We continue the series on wie wir Traumata erben with Studio Marshmallow. How do traumatic events haunt society? Discussions and performances address, for example, the racist murders of the NSU or experiences of flight and war.
Filmmaker Dieu Hao Do and writer Senthuran Varatharajah have worked with us to create a whole package of essays. They invited other artists to join them. They all bring us their ghosts. Starting in March 2023, we will publish one of these essays each month on the Digitale Burg.
You can also expect performances again in 2023: the artist Nástio Mosquito will read poems and discuss them together with everyone present. This will take place at various locations in Münster. In addition, we will show 16 Szenen für einen Wald once again! The scenic installation by Rimini Protokoll based on Droste-Hülshoff's novella Die Judenbuche will be back in the Burgpark this summer. Eight high seats await you.
And last but not least: Sleepover – a night at the castle. We invite you to the grand haunted finale. Together we will haunt the ghosts that haunt us. We ask them: How do we want to live with each other?
THE ACCESS
Creating access is important to us. Because we know: Literature and its background are not always immediately comprehensible. We want to create keys, i.e. access points, for you and with you.
This is what our current special exhibition does, for example: DROSTE DIGITAL. Handschriften – Räume – Installationen. It can be seen on the upper floor of Hülshoff Castle until September 30, 2023. The exhibition focuses on Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's digitised manuscripts. Several living rooms and the attic were redesigned by artists. Now they are walk-in Droste poetry and history: Droste's youth room was staged by Nora Gomringer, Dorothee Elmiger has imagined the author's possible home office, the Anna Kpok collective invites you on a journey to the so-called Orient and Hypen-Labs has created a professional selfie mirror cabinet out of the bathroom.
Denkfabrik 2023 – Welt & Anschauung will then deal directly with approaches – to text, to institution, to world. For whom does the world look like? How can intersections of our views of the world enrich all of our world views? Will we possibly be able to change or sharpen our views in this way? The think tank will take place from October 27 to 29. You can expect performative formats, from readings to installations, screenings and concerts.
In the digital translation lab Trans|Droste we will translate texts by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff into different languages with translators and other experts. In 2023 there will be two translation labs. One lab will focus on »Writing as a Woman« and will translate several of Droste's poems into French and Arabic, among other languages. Translations into German sign language and Dutch will revolve around the theme of »haunting«. The translations will appear at the Digital Burg. We make the translations accessible in discussion events and readings.
And access is also the topic in October 2023: On the 50th anniversary of the death of the author Ingeborg Bachmann, we will take a transdisciplinary look at her prose project Todesarten, especially the novel Malina. Together with the author Peter Waterhouse and uniT Graz, we will re-read the texts. And artists will make Malina a performative experience for us.
